. right now the storm has started bearing down on canada. it's about 145 miles or so southwest of halifax, snow scotia after brushing parts of massachusetts overnight. the storm disrupted vacations this labor day weekend. its close skirt up the eastern seaboard was less intense than feared. the storm is still kicking up dangerous rip currents. we have nbc's kevin tibbles live in rock port, massachusetts. sunshine in the last hour. looks like sunshine how. you're having a good time it looks like. >> reporter: alex, earl we hardly new you. i don't think we got to meet you at all last night. it rained here a little bit, but nothing like the dire predictions that have been taking place all week with this cat 4 storm showing up here. earl turned out to be a bit of a wimp actually. it's a beautiful day in rock port. all the activities planned for the labor day weekend and were put on hold, everything is being put back on. if folks were headed out here and were a little scared of the weather forecast, my advice to you would be to hop into a car right now because it is a gorgeous day here in rock
warning. you see the tropical storm warnings through the new england coast and also in to parts of canada. so ocean city not getting it too bad. virginia beach not too bad. one area that got hit last night is kill devil hills, north carolina. phillip jones is down there. how are things now and tell me what sort of damage occurred. >> reporter: right new things are looking better than few hours ago. earl's swirl hear did have an affect. we can show you damage at a shell gas station here. the wind taking the canopy off of the top of the gas station and pushing it in to the building next door. we saw about six hours worth of strong, sustained winds an driving rain that left some roads flood an canopies knocked over. the storm surge got up to the dunes and in some locations flooded some roads. overall, there have been very few reports of serious damage. there is no widespread power outage at any point an no widespread reports of serious damage and we haven't heard anything about any injuries. the mandatory evacuations issued up and down the outer banks have been lifted at noon today. tourists

pressure. strong high pressure extends from areas of canada through the northeast and mid-atlantic. it's one of the reasons earl is heading up the coast opposed to the atlantic. this front f it was a little hurt east we would be in better shape but it will nudge earl away from the coast but it is too close for comfort. there's the thundershowers in storms toledo to indianapolis. maybe delays with that so check with your carrier. earl is a well-defined tropical storm. got stronger yesterday. great environment for it. and you can see earl cranking away in the the atlantic, moving more north than northwest. this is the turn we have been walk talk about. dangerous category four storm. an the forecast brings it up to hatteras tonight. tomorrow morning we are looking at a category three storm. not far off shore from norfolk an the delmarva here. so, this will bring big winds and waves. 50-mile an hour winds potentially for ocean city. martha's vineyard here, by friday night, maybe toward midnight they could be getting hit on the cape and then in to canada over the weekend will be doing bette

.s. and is about to leave eastern canada. we tally the storm aftermath. >>> and the redskins make the final cuts to the roster. who is in and who is out as we head toward the season opener against the dallas cowboys. >>> good morning and welcome to fox 5 morning news sunday. i'm melanie alnwick. sarah simmons is off today. we have several developments in the recovery from the gulf spill. >>> but a house fire in the district. this started around 4:00 in the 4900 block of minnesota avenue northeast. the flames quickly spread. at one point the home was fully engulfed and the home is a total loss. the owners were not home at the time and the heat was so intense that an adjacent home suffered damage. we have no word on the cause. >>> well now to the latest on earl. the storm is weakening as it heads away from canada's eastern coast and the storm is being blamed for one death in nova scotia. a man drowned trying to tie up his boat. a lot are without power. in new england, earl spared cape cod before heading to canada. by 60 mile-per-hour winds pounded this home. parts of it actually slid into the sea

to a weather disturbance in canada. a few showers coming off of lake ontario. to our south in north carolina, a few clouds over the water. that is about it. we have sunshine here this morning. we have some clouds on occasion yesterday. i do not think we both see as many today. it has drifted further to the northeast. we will be further away from that. let's take a look outside right now. there is the sunshine with blue skies. 67 at the airport and the inner harbor at 69. the low temperature this morning was 53. 45% humidity so that number is dropping off. the barometer is rising now that the cool front and hurricane earl have moved further away. west winds at 10 miles per hour. any breeze today will be out of the west and northwest. it will not be as gusting as it was yesterday. let's take a look at the current temperatures. instead of seeing all kinds of different colors, we see greens which are the upper 60's near 70 degrees. in see green and changing to blew and blew which are the low 60's near the 50's. there is some cool air out there especially in the mountains. this is the cruelest we

? >> earl is clearing new england and heading to the maritime provinces of canada. >> it has gotten over -- it was far enough off shore it was just a big squalor really for us. nearby in the mid-atlantic region, hatteras probably got the worst of it. it wasn't probably as bad as it could have been. in new england the storm has weakened. now, as as always happens behind a hurricane, you get excellent weather. here's the radar. h.d. doppler showing the eye of the storm. the radar is only seeng the wench half of the storm. the eastern half of the storm is too far away from the radar to pick up any echos. mostly up in the state of maine now. one good squalor line running through vermont and new hampshire and down into massachusetts. a couple showers along lake eerie, and that's associated with a cool front that went through. that's the next big thing. cooler air is coming in behind this. a cool front has cleared the area without rain behind this. we'll talk about a terrific holiday weekend. summer is on the way out. it is all coming up with the insta-weather plus forecast. >> earl has come a
of sunshine with no rain nearby. the closest rain is up in maine and canada. here is a look at the hd doppler radar. sunshine as far south as our area. tropical storm earl moving up into canada. it is moving out of the picture. let's take a look at the large picture here. some rain in the gulf coast region where the air is more tropical. a few showers in montana. that is it. very quiet weather except for the northeastern corner of the u.s. let's look at the sunshine. a beautiful morning. 72 but the airport and 74 at the inner harbor. the humidity is way down at 43% which will make this nice. perfect weather for the labor day weekend. i almost did not want to see summer going away. the barometer is low but rising that earl's leaving. finally we can get the barometer of there. west winds are picking up 12-24 miles per hour. today would be the 12th in a row that we have not had significant rain. yesterday we had a trace of right which was an outer band of earl along the western shore of the day. if has been 12 days without any significant rain. we have a deficit for the month of about 0.3 inch.
